What is Pupil Premium?
Pupil Premium is extra funding from the government to help schools improve outcomes for disadvantaged pupils. It’s used to support learning, close attainment gaps, and provide pastoral care.

Who is eligible?
Children may be eligible if they:

  • Are currently receiving Free School Meals (FSM), or have received them in the past 6 years (known as Ever 6 FSM)
  • Are looked-after or previously looked-after by a local authority
  • Have been adopted from care or are under a guardianship/residence order
  • Have a parent serving in the armed forces (Service Pupil Premium)
  •

What’s the difference between FSM and Pupil Premium?

  • FSM is a benefit for families with low income, providing free meals at school.
  • Pupil Premium is the funding schools receive when a child qualifies for FSM or meets other criteria. It helps schools provide additional support.

Eligibility for FSM/Pupil Premium includes families receiving:

  • Universal Credit (with net income under £7,400/year)
  • Income Support
  • Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance
  • Income-related Employment and Support Allowance
  • Child Tax Credit (without Working Tax Credit, and income under £16,190)

  • Support under the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999
  • Pension Credit (guaranteed element)
